UMP Open Wheel Modifieds

**As of July 1st, 2004, the Gremlin roof will no longer be allowed at any UMP racetrack.

1.  Roll cage must consist of continuous hoops not less than 1.5” outside diameter and must have a wall thickness of at
      least .095. 
2.  Must be frame mounted in at least 6 places.
3.  Must consist of a configuration of front & rear hoops connected by tubing on the sides or side hoops.  Driver’s head
      must not protrude above cage with helmet on.  Roll cage must be securely supported and braced.  Top hoop must
      have crossbar.
4.  Protection of feet is mandatory.  Bar across back of engine with vertical bars and rub rails or similar protection.
5.  No brace bars forward of the cage may be higher than stock hood height.
6.  Driver door bars must be as parallel with the ground as possible and located perpendicular to the driver so as to
      provide maximum protection for driver but without causing difficulty getting in or out of the vehicle.  The side bars
      must be welded to the front and rear of the roll cage members.  No brazing or soldering.  Door bars less than .095
      thickness, must have 4 bars at least 1.5” diameter.
7.  Helmets are required and must be approved SHCA or Snell type full coverage.
8.  Fire suits of flame retardant nature must be worn by all competitors.  Fire resistant gloves recommended but not
      required.
9.  Brakes must be operated on all 4 wheels and must lock up all 4 wheels at inspection, while racing and at any and
      all times.  No drilling of brake rotors or calipers.  No altering of brake rotors or calipers.  No single disc brake rotors.
      Must be O.E.M.
10. Exhaust systems must be mounted in such a way to direct spent gases away from areas of possible spillage of fuels.
       Headers must be pointed away from ground.  No more than 1/2” clearance surrounding header pipe when directed
       through firewall.
11. All cars must have fuel cells 32 gallon maximum in completely enclosed steel container.  All cells to have a minimum
       of two 2” x 1/8” steel straps surrounding them.  Fuel cells must be protected in rear of axle by roll cage tubing
       mounted securely.  No part of fuel cell can be lower than protective tubing.
12. Batteries must be securely mounted and shielded.  Batteries cannot be mounted inside of driver’s cockpit.
13. Fuel can either be gasoline or alcohol.  No nitrous oxide.  No additives of any kind.
14. No loose objects in driver’s compartment.  All weights must be painted white or silver with car number on it. 
       All weights must be attached with at least 2 1/2” bolts through the weight.  All weights must be inside body of car,
       not attached to rear bumper.  All weights must be mounted below interior sheet metal and ALL windows.
15. Factory production full 1950 or newer parallel American passenger car frames only.  Frames may be cut in rear only
       at point not farther than 36” from center of rear end housing.  Frames must be complete in front of firewall. No cutting
       of frame in any way in front of firewall.
16.  Frames may not be widened or narrowed and must be able to support roll cage on both sides.  Must be full and
        complete both sides.  Front cross member may be notched for radiator clearance only.  Minimum frame and body
        height from ground is 4”.
17. Front suspension must be O.E.M. and be in stock location.  Must be replaceable by stock part from same type
       suspension.  No aluminum shocks or any other suspension part.  Stock passenger car spindles only.  No fabricated
       spindles.  Bottom A-frames cannot be altered or moved.  UMP approved and licensed 68-72 Chevelle lower control
       arms copies may be approved in the future if continue to be scarce. But not yet.
18.  Tube type upper  A-frame allowed and can be moved.
19.  No coil over shocks allowed front or rear.  No homemade coil overs anywhere.
20. No Jeep, Bronco, 4-wheel drive or sports car, etc. frames allowed.  No front wheel drives.
21. Rear of frame may be altered to accept leaf or coil springs.  Any coil springs must be at least 4 1/2” outside diameter.
       No fiberglass springs.  No fiberglass lift bars.  No rear torsion bars.
22. One shock per wheel only.  No lay down shocks less than 12” from brake rotor.  Additional shocks in other locations
       permissible.  Any shock on car can be claimed for $120.00

 

23. Minimum wheel base 108”.  Maximum wheel base 112”.  No front clips or tube type allowed.  No aluminum
       suspension or rear-end parts.  No aluminum or fiberglass drive shafts.
24. All race cars must meet measurements of drawing.  There are only 5 roof lines to choose from.  Don’t try to invent
       anything new!
25. Bodies must be Tiempo, Cavalier, Mustang, Daytona, Gremlin, etc.  American compact cars only. 
      NO NIGHTMARES!  No panel vans or station wagons.  Both rear windows must match.  Both must be
      clear or both must be open.  Both must be stock appearing and match.  Front windshield and rear window
      support must be stock appearing.  Front window support may have clear Lexan support of no more than 10”
      including the roof post at bottom, going straight up to top.  Must be full size roof.  No flat roofs. No
      homemade inventions. Must go from bottom to top in a straight angle.  Rear slope must be no more than 2”
      gradual maximum, for a maximum length of 6”.  Roof cannot be more than 12” past the rear axle.
26. Original roof lines of vehicle should be maintained with a maximum 1” drop rear to front. No wings. No spoilers or
       any other ground effects allowed inside or outside of car.
27. Engine compartment will remain open.  No side panels.  Hood sides may have maximum 4” drop and must be
       enclosed at rear of hood.  Bodies should extend no further forward than back of block.  Rear of bodies to be solid
       panel at least 8” high with car number on it.  Rear panel must be completely fastened from side to side at all times.
       No gaps allowed.  No holes of any kind allowed.  Any rear panel coming loose during race or qualifications will be
       disqualified.  Rear panel must be solid from quarter panel to quarter panel.
28. All windows must have minimum 12” vertical opening.  Entire interior must have 12” clearance from interior deck to
        roof and all sections of roll cage for easy exiting in case of fire.
29. No half moon roofs.
30. No direct drives allowed.  Transmission must be bolted to engine and must have forward and reverse.  Must be able
       to shift to forward or reverse with engine running.  BERT type transmissions okay.
31. Competition shoulder harness at least 3”, lap belt of at least 3” and sub strap required.  No factory type shoulder belts
       or straps.  Metal to metal buckles are required on shoulder and seat belts.  Shoulder harness should be mounted
       even with or above driver’s shoulders.  Belts and harness recommended being no more than one year old.
32.  Kill switch required within easy reach of driver.  This switch must say “ON” or “OFF”.
33.  Drive shaft loop is required and must be constructed of at least 1/2” x 2” steel.  Must be at least 6” behind U-joint. 
       Drive shaft must be white or silver.
34.  Any American made engine may be used as long as rear of engine bell housing flange is mounted at least 72”
       forward from the center of real axle.  Engine offset must be kept within 2” of center line of front cross member. 
       Engine height minimum 11” from ground to front center of crankshaft.  No aluminum blocks!
35.  No adjustable shocks, hydraulic or pneumatic weight jacks, Trackers, M.S.D. boxes or similar adjustable components
       of any kind inside cockpit of car.
36.  No wheel rotation control device of any kind allowed.  No controlled timing device attached to or controlling
        accelerator, or spin or rotation of wheel allowed.  No adjustable restrictor plates.
37.  Front bumper must be mounted frame end to frame end with the bottom loop parallel to the ground.  Minimum 1.5”
       pipe able to support car if lifted by wrecker.  Rear bumpers may be constructed of pipe or flat stock and must protect
       fuel cell.  Center of bumpers (front and rear) must be 18” from ground.  (Tolerance 2”)  Rear bumper, Nerf bars and
       bodies must not extend beyond width of rear tires and must not contain any sharp edges.
38.  Roof support (rear) not to extend past front side of rear upright of roll bar.
39.  Firewall must be solid from left side door to cockpit.  No gaps.  No holes of any kind.
40.  One 2 or 4 barrel carburetor.  Must be naturally aspirated.  No fuel injection.  No electric fuel pumps.  No magnetos.
41.  Any passenger car type rear end may be used.  No aluminum allowed, except lowering blocks, axle cap and drive
       plate.  No quick change devices allowed.  Any truck rear end may also be used.
42.  Clutch type transmissions must be equipped with an explosion proof steel bell housing.  If no explosion proof bell
        housing is available for your engine, or if you prefer, you may construct a shield of at least 1/2” x 6” steel covering the
        clutch area 360 degrees and be securely fastened.

 

43.  Steering box must be O.E.M.  No rack and pinion.  Must remain within original bolt pattern for type of frame used. 
        In cockpit steering may be modified to suit driver’s taste, but must be on left side of cockpit.  No center steering.
44.  No radios.  No mirrors.
45.  No aluminum shells, hubs, “A” frames, spindles or any other aluminum suspension parts.  No plastic carbon wheels. 
       All calipers must be O.E.M.  No machining or lightening of caliper.
46.  All engines must be able to be used in conventional passenger car without alteration.  Motor mounts cannot be
        removed or altered.  Castings and fittings must not be changed.  No machine work on outside engine or on front or
        rear of crankshaft.
47.  No total dry sump systems allowed.  Wet systems must be operative and will go with claim.
48.  Cooling systems may be altered or modified if stock appearing hood line is maintained.
49.  ENGINE CLAIM:  $550.00 plus exchange of engine.  (Wreckers get $50.00)
50.  Claim does not include flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, bell housing, headers, carburetor, starter, fan & pulleys,
        motor mounts, sending units and switches for oil pressure and water temperature, carburetor adaptor, clutch ball,
        clutch arm, throw out bearings, dip stick, water pump, distributor, plug wires or fuel pump.
51.  Driver making claim must have taken the checkered flag in feature and be on same lap as the leader.  Claim must be
        made in cash or certified check to promoter within 5 minutes of end of feature.  Driver must have cash or certified
        check, plus his U.M.P. license on him.  Cannot be given to driver by anyone else.  No driver can make over two (2)
        claims in U.M.P. for the entire year.  A driver can claim another driver’s engine only once during the year.  Only the
        winner can be claimed.  In case of multiple claims on the same engine, engine will go to qualified driver finishing
        furthest back.  No driver may claim an engine if he has spun out and caused a yellow flag caution period.  If claim is
        refused, claim is not held against claiming driver.  If a driver has a vastly superior engine and blows everyone away
        in a race, then he needs to be claimed.  In the case of good competitive racing among several drivers, then there is
        no need for grudge claiming.  The only reason for claiming is to keep the racing low dollar and competitive.
52.  Driver making claim must drive his car immediately after finish of feature, under its own power, directly to claiming
        area. Only drivers and official are allowed in claiming area.  Claiming area must be designated by promoter to all
        drivers at driver’s meeting prior to feature event.  Feature winner must go to claiming area immediately following
        finish of feature event.  If no driver comes immediately to claiming area, winner may go to pits.
53.  Claimed engine must be completely removed within one (1) hour from time claim is made.
54.  First sell, no sell, or trade of engine by driver being claimed is binding.
55.  Only driver may claim engine, and only driver may agree to sell.
56.  Refusal to sell forfeits all cash, trophies and contingency winnings for feature, plus all U.M.P. State and National
        points for that night.  Any driver refusing to sell his engine when claimed within the rules loses his right to claim any
        engine for 12 months.  Driver refusing to sell his engine the first time is fined $200.00, and is suspended from racing
        at any and all U.M.P. race tracks for 1 week.  Drivers refusing to sell their engine the second time are fined $600.00
        and suspended for 4 weeks.
57.  All claimed engines must be removed from car at track.  Buyer must examine engine before removal.  Once removal
        is started, sale is final.  Any sabotage to claimed engine will result in saboteur being suspended from all U.M.P. races
        for 30 days, and until fine of $1,000.00 is paid to U.M.P.
58.  To claim an engine, claiming driver must have raced at least 1/2 of the sanctioned events at the sanctioned track
        where claim is made, or at least the last 3 straight feature events at that track.  Driver can have his motor claimed at
        any time.  No claim can be made by a driver his first night at a sanctioned track.
59.  To claim an engine, driver must have a current U.M.P. Membership license.  You cannot apply for a membership and
        claim an engine.  You must have the current membership license on you.  Yearly membership runs from
        February 1st through January 31st of each year.  All claims, positive or negative are to be reported to U.M.P. offices
        by promoter immediately.
60.  WEIGHT RULE:  Minimum weight 2,400 after races and at all times, with driver.  All weight determinations will be
       determined on the scales selected and determined by U.M.P. for each racing event.  You must weigh 2,400 pounds
        with driver at all times on scales selected and determined by U.M.P. for each racing event.  NO TOLERANCE! 
        One pound will result in disqualification.
61. TIRES:  Hoosier A-40, D-40 or H-40 compounds.  26.5/8.0/15 or 27.5/8.0/15.  Maximum width 9”. 
       NO GROOVING OF ANY TIRE!  Only the A-40 and H-40 can have slight siping.  No recaps.
62.  Wheels must be conventional one piece steel with a maximum width 8”, bead lock and mud plugs allowed on right
        rear tire only!  Foam mud plugs preferred, any other mud plugs must be securely bolted to wheel behind bead lock. 
        Any driver using metal or plastic mud plug that is not securely bolted to wheel behind bead lock is subject to a
        $200.00 fine.  RULE CHANGE - A mud plug may be used on the inside of the left rear wheel.
63.  Maximum overall width (front or rear) shall not exceed 78” from outside of tread to outside of tread.  Maximum 1”
        spacer between hub and wheel.  Steel or aluminum spacer allowed on front of car only, so long as overall width
        does not exceed 78”.
64.  Any participant who fights in pits, on track, or on race premises will be suspended from all U.M.P. events for one
       week and fined $100.00, and is on one year probation.  A second fight, driver is suspended for two weeks, and fined
       $200.00.  Any driver in a third fight will be suspended for one year and fined $1,000.00.  All drivers are responsible
       for all crew members and associates.
65.  Uniform interpretation of rules at all tracks to be insured by observation of U.M.P. representative.  U.M.P. rules to
        prevail at all U.M.P. sanctioned race tracks.  No rules enforcement by a race track, no U.M.P. sanction. 
        No U.M.P. points.
66.  The rules and regulations set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events only, and to
        establish minimum acceptable requirements for successful events.  No express or implied warranty of safety shall
        result from publication of, or compliance with these rules and/or regulations.  They are intended as a guide for the
        conduct of the sport, and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to participants.
67.  Both rear tires must be showing when observed from rear of car.
