- Murphy Speedway announced the local support divisions that will be
in action along with the O'Reilly Southern All-Star Super Late Models
for the Grand Opening, "Sweetwater Summer Slammer 50 event on the
Friday night, July 2nd. The 50 lap, $5,000 to win SLM race will be
joined by three local divisions that will see a minimal 20 lap "A"
Main set of features for each. The Late Model division (not O'SAS
SLM's) based on the rules from Smoky Mtn. Speedway in neighboring
Maryville, TN will be in competition, as will a Mini (Pony) Stock and
Front Wheel Drive divisions.
Denny and Bill Garner of Smoky Mtn. Speedway, have been nothing but
Grade "A" first class towards our operation from the beginning."
stated Israel Campbell, PR Director for the track. "We're wanting to
create a separate division of Late Models that can be competitive on a
lesser cost scale to the racers and their teams, while still providing
a over-the-top action packed race to where one competitor won't
dominate due to his budget being larger than others."
The Late Model ("Mtn. Late Models") division will run hot lap
practice sessions and a series of preliminary heat races, to determine
the starting order of their 20 lap, $600 to win "A" Main feature. The
Mini (Pony) Stock and Front Wheel Drive divisions will run hot lap
practice sessions and draw for their 15 lap "A" Main features ($175 to
win in FWD and $150 to win in Mini Stock). For all divisions that
compete in the "Feature Only" scenario, Passing Money ($10 per
position) will serve as a bonus to the winners, based on their
starting position.
